The Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) engaged IEC to conduct a Food Waste and Liquid Food Processing Waste Survey. The objective of this project was to update SMUD’s inventory of food waste and liquid food processing waste sources to support the evaluation of the business case for constructing a permanent co-digestion facility at the Sacramento Regional County Sanitation District (SRCSD) Wastewater Treatment Plant. The scope of the project included updating a regional inventory of food waste and liquid food processing waste sources, determining the technical and economic feasibility of utilizing food waste as a feedstock for co-digestion, and creating a target list of the most likely candidates for disposal at a permanent co-digestion facility at the wastewater treatment plant.
