CLIENT: Sacramento Municipal Utility District
For the SMUD CVFA Boiler Design project, the client contracted IEC to perform detail mechanical and electrical engineering design. IEC was hired by SMUD after the equipment was procured and the site layout, civil, and structural designs were completed by another engineering firm.
When IEC picked up the project, IEC quickly discovered that some of the equipment procured were not adequately selected. As a result, IEC evaluated the plant design thermodynamically utilizing power plant simulation software and presented various design options that would allow the project to use the already purchased equipment. With the proposed design changes, IEC was able to save the project and keep the project moving forward. During the construction phase, IEC continued to provide field engineering services to support the project. The design team transitioned to field engineers to provide seamless supports.
IEC’s deliverables included mechanical and electrical calculations, piping stress analysis, thermodynamic analysis, a process flow diagram, water balance, P&IDs, single-line diagram, three-line diagram, wiring diagram, grounding and lightning protection drawings, mechanical piping layout, electrical raceway layout, structural supports, and instrumentation.
