IEC to Develop Local Food Waste Demonstration Project for SMUD

Sacramento, Calif., November 9, 2009 – The Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) has hired IEC to develop a local demonstration project for food waste pre-processing for co-digestion to supplement the results of its previous biogas enhancement pilot test. Objectives for this project include demonstration of two approaches to food waste pre-processing for co-digestion at a local food processing site and determining the potential beneficial uses of resulting waste streams. IEC will determine the operational costs and environmental benefits associated with the pre-processing of solid food waste and its potential to contribute to an increase in renewable biogas production within SMUD’s service area. The demonstration project will provide data about the costs and operational issues associated with each approach.
